Sikh Environmental Leadership Program (SELP) 2023

Sikh Environmental Leadership Program (SELP)

Ecosikh proudly launched its Summer Internship program in 2021 called the Sikh Environmental Leadership Program (SELP). Program is focused on developing next generation of environmental leaders by imparting knowledge of its successful Guru Nanak Sacred Forest project in achieving our vision of environmental leadership for sustainable planet. It is an opportunity for Sikh youth globally to develop knowledge and skills in attaining sustainability skills.

In the previous years, we have had number of High School youth intern with Ecosikh to do research projects and other activities. SELP is a more a formal 5-6 week program offered globally to High School students.

In its inaugural year of 2021, program had a batch of High School youth from across the regions in India and USA (including New Jersey, Maryland Connecticut etc).

The program is focused on providing high school students – an opportunity to get engaged in the Guru Nanak Sacred Forest project while also learning Miyawaki methodology. The idea is to develop future leaders who are well versed in the environmental issues and training them on the Guru Nanak Sacred Forest methodology, so they take this knowledge back to their communities, become responsible citizens and stay engaged in sustainability efforts. It also gives youth an opportunity to learn first-hand the potential career tracks as an environmental engineer, sustainability engineer or even a forest scientist. They learned and performed activities like soil testing, researching & documenting native species in their regions, forest survey methodology, and designing and developing the forest from scratch with species selection, plantation and the project management of it.

In 2022, Ecosikh expanded the SELP to other global regions including Canada, Ireland, UK along with USA and India.

In 2023, The SELP will be convened virtually via Zoom. The sessions will commence on 10th July 2023 (Monday) and will conclude on 11th August 2023 (Friday).
